Executive Functioning Groups for children in Grades 6-8 and their parents/caregivers

Is your Grade 6-8 child continually running late? Unable to find their belongings?  Overwhelmed by tasks and unsure how to begin or to work independently? Getting N's or S's on their report card under Learning Skills & Work Habits?

We can help

Your child may be experiencing difficulties associated with executive functioning.  This is an umbrella term that refers to a set of self-regulation skills, sometimes called the brain’s management system.  Because executive functioning challenges can impact the whole family (e.g., if one person is running late, everyone is running late) this program is designed for both children and parents to attend at the same time but in separate sessions.

The next program starts TBD

 The Child/Youth Program:

The program will focus primarily on helping your child to develop the executive function skills needed to get multi-step tasks done at school (e.g., assignments, projects) and at home (e.g., chores).   It will be co-facilitated by a member of our psychology team and a teacher.

Your child will learn to:

  • Set goals and develop step-by-step plans to meet those goals

  • Monitor their progress as they work through a plan

  • Review their plans to make improvements for the future

  • Understand how the brain’s executive system operates and how to use calming strategies to manage an overwhelmed brain.

The Parent Program:

Each week, the parent program will review the particular skills and knowledge that are being introduced to your child.  For instance, when your child is learning about the brain’s executive system or how to create a plan, we will be sharing this with you so that you know what your child is working on.   This gives us an opportunity to discuss ways to support your child during the week and then to review how things went the following week in a supportive environment.

We will also discuss strategies that parents can use as a family in order to support the development of your child’s executive function skills (e.g., family meetings, family calendar).

The cost for the five-week program, including both child and parent sessions and coaching is $1200. Some or all of the cost may be covered under your employee extended health care benefits under Psychological Services. Invoices will be sent weekly after each session. Payment is through e-transfer.

Groups will meet virtually via Google Meet.

Next sessions begin TBD
